Marit Ilison - 70 Cotton Smocks
February 14, 2012

The 70 cotton smocks worn in the performance 70 Cotton Smocks, by freelance fashion designer Marit Ilison, are hand-dyed in colour gradations ranging from white to dark purple. The effect not only makes for a brilliant display of colour, but its use conveys the performances ideas of self identity and self obsession:

“Monochrome colour gradation refers to the purest, balanced form of self (white), while the dark purple refers to the self completely absorbed and overwhelmed by surrounding information noise. The artist went through a time-consuming hand-dyeing process, hence looking within while taking off an imaginary smock herself.”

AIAIAI - Colour to our Ears
February 09, 2012

Danish audio design company AIAIAI have teamed up with Brooklyn-based record label Fool’s Gold to produce a new line of headphones with the same name, including the TMA-1 pictured here. We love the mute 'stock' black combined with the loud yellow, brought together through its contemporary Scandinavian styling, of which the company is renowned for.

This makes a refreshing change to the established monotone dominance in digital hardware in recent years. The theme does not stop at this single range; colour seems to play an integral role throughout their products, making them well worth checking out.

Jacqui Symons Origami Installation
December 2, 2011

British artist Jacqui Symon's latest installation; Together We Are Greater, consists of 2500 suspended origami boxes. All The boxes are all made from used, recycled and secondhand paper.

Jacqui Symons is not afraid to be bold with color. We love her innovative uses of chromatic themes, fields and gradients of color, that often a central element in her work. Her varied practice expands to include materials and methods that lend themselves to color and she utilizes printmaking, origami, digital arts, collage and stained glass to convey her love of this theme.

Symons is an artist and designer who works in printmaking, paper and design. Based at Woodend Mill in Mossley, she constantly takes inspiration from the surrounding countryside and nearby Peak District. This love of nature and the environment is apparent in her work, especially her printmaking in which she uses leaves to create intricate and detailed monoprints.

London 2012 Olympic Posters
November 07, 2011

We had to show you our favourite of the Olympics posters by Sarah Morris...

Big Ben 2012 by Sarah Morris
The official line:
Since the mid-1990s Sarah Morris has been creating complex, geometric, abstract paintings derived from cityscapes and architectural detail, origami patterns and signs and symbols.

To celebrate the Paralympic Games coming to London Morris has created an abstract representation of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks - Big Ben. The grids and vivid colours create a sense of dynamism and also evoke images of athletic tracks, swimming lanes, and field markings.

We were also inspired by the beautiful use of blue in the poster for 'Swimming' by Howard Hodgkin, click below for this any the complete collection of posters...

Postmodernism - Exhibition @ V&A
October 12, 2011

Sat 24 September 2011 – Sun 15 January 2012

This is the first in-depth survey of art, design and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s, examining one of the most controversial phenomena in recent art and design history: postmodernism. It shows how postmodernism evolved from a provocative architectural movement in the early 1970s and rapidly went on to influence all areas of popular culture including design, art, music, film, performance and fashion. By the 1980s consumerism and excess were the trademarks of the postmodern.

"overthrowing purity and simplicity in favour of exuberant colour..."

The exhibition explores the radical ideas that challenged Modernism; overthrowing purity and simplicity in favour of exuberant colour, bold patterns, artificial looking surfaces, historical quotation, parody and wit and above all, a newfound freedom in design. See over 250 objects across all areas of art and design and revisit a time when style was not just a ‘look’ but became an attitude.
