31 Aug Summer Exhibition Update
Autumn is an exciting time for the design world. Trade shows are in full flow across the globe and the pace is building towards (whisper it) Christmas. 2016 however, feels special. Opening this week, the London Design Festival is now in its fourteenth year and has developed a reputation as one of the most innovative festivals in the world. From 7-27 September, the London Design Biennale takes over Somerset House and on 24 November the Design Museum opens in Kensington.
At Home in Olympia
With all of this activity in the capital, Block have taken up residence in London and are having a terrific time. Last week we felt very much at Home in Olympia at Top Drawer, an exhibition we have attended for over ten years. It was wonderful to catch up with fellow designers and to see new trends emerge. This year we were delighted to be able to launch three brand new collections including our Origami Fold Clocks and Typographic Coat Racks. Our Hello Coat Rack has done down a storm both in the UK and Internationally and we were delighted with the response at Home to the Love Coat Rack.
Our typographic range takes inspiration from handwritten neon installations so we will be sure to visit the Grundy Art Gallery before the end of the year to see work by Martin Creed, Tracey Emin, Eddie Peake and the many other artists featured in Blackpool’s major survey of neon art.
Accent on Design, NY Now
Our biannual trips to New York are highlights of the Block calendar; and time was very much the theme this year with new clock and calendar collections joining our homeware range. Inspired by Origami, our Mountain and Pleat Fold Clocks had their debut at the show and looked wonderful against our signature teal backdrop.
The products that we show in New York represent six months of hard work and we are always a little anxious to see how our collections will be received. We needn’t have worried: we were rushed off our feet throughout the show and able to treat ourselves to a celebratory cocktail in the departure lounge at JFK. Then, imagine our delight to arrive back in the UK to a gorgeous image of two of the unsuspecting team Block gracing the homepage of NY Now! We can’t wait to get stateside again in February with some new tricks up our sleeves.
