This month we take a visit to Scotland and the beautiful store Bluebellgray. All about fresh, uplifting and modern prints to add joyful colour to your home, Bluebellgray was founded in 2009, by Fi Douglas. The very first 6 cushions Fi originally created on her kitchen table have grown into a full range of homeware including bedding, fabric, wallpaper, rugs and tableware, all in her signature colourful, handpainted, watercolour style. Everything is created originally in the brand’s studio in Scotland, staying true to the original vision - Fi still paints all the signature designs that have become synonymous with the brand.

The shop is located on Hyndland Road, in a beautiful old Art Deco, former bank building. In addition to stocking signature Bluebellgray products, the shop also stocks an edited selection of eclectic, sourced decor items and rugs from around the world. The emphasis on the shop is to offer a warm and welcoming shopping experience with free interiors and colour advice available by appointment.

Hi Fi, tell us more about the story behind Bluebellgray.

I truly believe in the importance of keeping the independent high street alive, and living in a digital age I think it is more relevant than ever to give customers a unique, special and personal experience when they choose to shop in person. We are bucking the trend by originally being an online retailer who is now branching out into a physical store, but I really believe there is a magic in real life shopping and the joy of discovering and falling in love with a special item in person will never get old. I want our store to be somewhere customers feel welcomed and happy, somewhere where customers can come and discover the uplifting power of bringing colour into your home.

When did your shop open?

We first opened our doors in April 2018. We can’t believe it has been well over a year already!

Why did you choose to open in Hyndland?

We chose Hyndland in the West End of Glasgow becuase there’s a real sense of community here. There are dozens of lovely independent businesses around including; cafes, resturants, shops and more. We all support each other.

Tell us about your favourite details of your shop.

We adore our custom made neon sign from Bag&Bones, above our till which reads ‘’Would you like a tassel with that?” - it captures our style perfectly!

Please share with us a special moment for your shop.

Our opening party was incredible! So many lovely friends, family, customers and trade insiders came along to show their support and it meant so much to share the experience with them.

Have you had any surprise bestsellers?

It’s always daunting when we launch new designs out into the world but we were delighted with the reaction to our ‘Vegetable Patch’ collection! Our customers love it and it always sparks a conversation (pictured below, curtain on right and tray bottom centre).

What’s next for you and your shop?

That’s a very good question! We’d love to expand the kids section as there’s a real gap in the market in Glasgow for beautiful kids toys.
