A bold new staircase has opened, bridging for the first time the old South West Coastal Path to the continually modernising 19th Century Royal William Yard, Plymouth. Designed by Gillespie Yunnie Architects, the cantilevered stairs not only have a bold and striking appearance, it is when night falls the other half of the design is revealed. The stairs, and all that use them, are flooded with LED light in a circulating colour loop. It creates an inviting entrance to the yard and a lasting memory for those who leave through it. The stairs are part of the ongoing regeneration of the yard by developer Urban Splash, which has been converting the complex of Grade 1 listed warehouses into apartments, offices and restaurants.
